Owning Your Artistry: Tips to Help Make Your Brand Stand Out

Hey loves, its been a while since my last post. I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t been able to just sit and write. If you follow my social media, you’ll know that I recently started my own brand, Charley’s Closet.

Through that, I’ve learned so much about myself and who I am as a person, entrepreneur, and artist. Starting out, I had my own vision which I still hold onto today. Girl Bosses like Nichole Lynel and Ronne Brown inspire me to do great things! Today we have so many “look-alike” brands, photographers, bloggers, etc. But as an artist, it is important to stick to your artistry and your own true self.

Owning Your Artistry

When it comes to owning your artistry, think about what makes YOU and your craft unique. This was weighing heavily on my mind, so I thought I’d share these thoughts of mine in this short blog post. I’ve come up with a series of questions to ask yourself as you prepare to bring your business to the next level! This will help you separate your business from all of the others in your industry. For example, let’s pretend I’m a bakery owner.

What is your Artistry?

My artistry (or business) is that I can bake any dessert known to man. I want to start a business called York’s Bakery.

Who are your competitors?

Around my area, my competitors are local bakeries and cake makers. My biggest competitor is Pat’s Cakes, Cupcakes, and Cookies.

What about your competitors do you like?

I love that they have a variety of desserts to choose from and they have their very own cake making service.

What makes you different from your competitors?

I want to stand out by offering baking classes every Saturday for those wanting to learn how to bake! They don’t offer that in my area, so that would be a nice asset to my business.

Thinking Outside The Box

You see how thinking outside the box could make you stand out from your competitors? It is important to know how you’ll stand out so people won’t view you as “just another bakery”. For me, owning a clothing line and retail brand was very personal to me because I love fashion. Its one of the many ways I choose to express myself. In Cleveland, there are many upcoming clothing brands. I own my artistry by putting my own personal taste and style to my brand.

I thought it would be hard for me to be noticed because of how highly penetrated the market was. Nonetheless, I found my artistry and I stuck to it. I love photography as well and it has became a big part of my brand. I am a stickler for quality. Fashion and Design have helped me put my brand in the hands of some amazing people and I am so grateful for that! I stayed away from the Fashion Nova look-alikes and built Charley’s Closet into its true form by making sure my brand represented myself and who I am and I love it. That, is how I chose to stand out. I really advice anyone wanting to start a business or if you already have one, or even if you’re just a writer or chef…whatever your artistry is, take these questions into consideration! Look over your business plan and make your artistry known! Until next time babes…

Tips for Growing Your Natural Hair!

Hey everyone! It’s June and I’m back with another post! If you’ve taken a look at my blog, some things have changed! I decided to go on head and change the theme around to fit my summer feel! Recently I went and got my hair straightened for the first time in 10 months!! So let’s call it a year. But wait, if you REALLY want to see my previous hair journey, read my last blog post on this topic (click here).

A Year’s Worth of No Heat….

Growth, yes indeed. I was honestly so surprised to see my hair come out this long. Throughout the school year I had lots of temptation to put heat onto my hair, but I persevered! I did lots of protective styles, like wigs and slick-back ponytails.

Tip 1 = Protective Styling

+ wigs, updo’s, crochet, braids, weaves, twist outs, etc. are all good styles to use in order to retain the no heat method

Helpful videos:

Tip 2 = Moisture

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset
22 inch loose wave wig with frontal

+ Keeping my hair moisturized was a key factor into my growth! When I wore wigs, I always sprayed water onto my hair while it was twisted underneath my wigs. I also used a mixture of olive oil, black castor oil, flax seed, and peppermint oil on my scalp!

+ Wigs are a great protective style! I prefer these more than weaves because you can take these off when you want! Plus, its easier to groom and keep up with your natural hair as well.

Tip 3 = Don’t Cut Your Split Ends…Yet!

+ There’s this myth that if you cut your split ends every once and a while, your hair will grow faster…. first of all, YOUR HAIR GROWS FROM YOUR ROOTS NOT YOUR ENDS! Your roots are the strongest part of your hair because it is where all your new growth is. I did not cut my ends for 10 months, not until I went to get my hair silk pressed! DO NOT GET ME WRONG, if you need to cut your ends because of split and dead ends please do so. Just watch how consistently you do it, because it isn’t always necessary.

+ Faux locs are my favorite braid style for protective styling! They’re trendy and are very versatile. I was able to do updo’s (like pictured), two pony tails, half-up/half-down, and even a low bun.

+ I had these in for about 2 months, and they were great for when I went on vacation! No heat, takes about 0-10 minutes to style, and it leaves you temporarily stress free!

Tip 4 = WATER

+ WATER, WATER, & more WATER. As much as we need water to stay alive, your hair needs its nutrition as well. I’m not saying drench your hair, but spray your hair down every day before applying ANY product!

Tip 5 = Be Gentle

+ Be gentle on your hair! When you’re detangling your hair, make sure to ALWAYS start at the bottom and work your way up. And again, start with water! Keep your hair hydrated when detangling so its easier to detangle. When you start from the bottom, you’re preventing less breakage. Give yourself enough time to style your hair. Never do your hair when you’re in a rush, this tactic could possibly harm your hair since you are styling it in a fast manner because you have somewhere to be.

Helpful Videos:

Tip 6 = No Heat

High ponytail with natural hair

+ I know this is a hard thing to do, but this truly does help. If you cant go as long as I did, try doing a one month no heat challenge and then build up from there.

+ As we all know, heat damages your hair. Whoever I defuse my natural hair, I used a cool setting. When I say I did not put heat to my hair for 10 months, that means no flat irons, no wand curlers, no blow dryer!

+ Try doing styles like high ponytails whether its with your natural hair or weave, low buns, and high buns.

Tip 7 = Products

High bun with natural hair

+ What you put into your hair is just as important as how you style it. I used minimal product as possible, even when doing high buns.

+ Brands I love: Carol’s Daughter, As I Am, SheaMoisture, Garner Fructis, and Auntie Jackie’s.

+ Finding what works for you and your hair type is key! What works for me might not work for you and thats okay! Remember, not all high-end/expensive products are better than drug store/cheap products.

+ Use more conditioner and less shampoo. I typically go through 2-3 bottles of conditioner and 1 bottle of shampoo every 2 months. Use sulfate free products.

Alright guys, thats it for me and my helpful tips. I hope this was at least a bit helpful!

My Snapchat Takeover with @MakeupforWOC!

The DM that started it all.

A few days ago, I was granted the opportunity to do a snapchat takeover for @MakeupForWOC. This was my first ever snapchat takeover! I was very nervous and excited, all at once. I didn’t know what look I was going to do. I wanted to do something smokey, but not too much. Something time efficient and radiant.

I went with an olive green smokey eye with nice grungy red lip color. Although I couldn’t find the name of the actual palette that I used for the green shimmer, here’s a list of the rest of products I used to achieve this look:

Product Details

Ben Nye Luxury Powder | Now I know I used this product way too much, but its just THAT good. If you are a women of color, you need to use a setting powder with a tint. Spring Makeup Must-Haves!

My go-to spring lok

Hey babes! It’s been SUCH a long time since I’ve last made a post! I’ve been so busy with school but now I have officially finished my junior year in college and am now a senior! Now that classes are over, I’ll be able to blog and post more frequently. Recently I made a beauty post of my favorite summer look on my instagram, check it out to see the details on this look! (click here)

So what are my spring makeup must-haves? First off, you have to have an SPF moisturizer/serum! I know this isn’t a makeup item, but it is essential to keeping your face hydrated! My favorite moisturizer and serum right now are NYX’s Honey Dew Me Up Primer, Pond’s Dry Skin Moisturizer, and Farsali’s Rose Gold Elixir.

Screen Shot 2018-05-07 at 11.08.09 AMAnother product I cannot live without is setting powder. It’s hot out, and you don’t want your makeup to crease! What setting powder does is soak up any excess moisture from your makeup that would cause it to move or crease. Say if you have smile lines like me, you know that setting powder is essential for everyday makeup use, even in the spring time! Since I’m a women of color, I tend to stay away from setting powders that don’t have any tint to it. My favorite one to use is the Ben Nye Setting Powder in the color “topaz”. Even though it is not one of the finest grains of powders, it works perfectly for me because it sets my makeup perfectly. Remember, it’s all about technique! You can use a harsh setting powder, but if you apply it correctly, it can work in your favor.

Screen Shot 2018-05-07 at 11.16.11 AMMy next product is everyone’s favorite product: highlighter! We all know the perks of using highlighter, but just getting that extra glow in the spring is worth while. If your’e a beauty guru like me and love to take good quality pictures, add some highlighter to your makeup to make your photos stand out more. People have this thought that they can only use highlighter on their cheekbones… WRONG. I use highlighter on my brow bone, collar bone, by my temples, and on my nose. Sometimes on my body for that extra glow! My fave highlighter right now is Fenty Beauty’s Killawat Freestyle Highlighter in “ginger binge/moscow mule”. I like this product because its very light and feathery, meaning it glides easy onto your face. Also the colors work well with darker skin tones.

My very last product that is in my essential package for the spring? Lipgloss! Tones and tones of lipgloss. All types of lipgloss: shimmery, glossy, and tinted! I’m starting love glossy lips more than matte, and there’s a reason why. Glossy lips are so much easier and convenient to apply. My favorite glosses right now are Maybelline Shine Shot lip Topcoat, NYX Butter Gloss in “Tiramisu”, and Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in “Sandstorm”. I tried to give you guys 3 options: clear, tinted, and shimmery.  These glosses are affordable and non-sticky. They work well with any skin-tone and are amazing products overall.

Alright guys, that’s it for my Spring Must-Have’s. If you have any products you think are essential for the spring, comment them below! I want to check them out. I hope you guys have a wonderful spring and also an amazing summer break! Make sure to check out my latest Youtube video! I’m working on producing more content on there, so stay tuned! Charley Turns 21! | Birthday Look Book

Hey babes! I’m back again with another look book. This past weekend, I celebrated my birthday (April 6th) with my closest friends. I’ve officially turned 21 and couldn’t be happier (no more fake IDs!)

As If

Top & Bottom: Fashion Nova | Bra: La Suenza | Shoes: Charlotte Russe | Watch: Francesca’s

This fit is definitely one for the bookstore me. Total 2018 School Girl. I didn’t think the skirt would look as good as it does on me! The quality is amazing, if I may add. I paired the plaid skirt with a black mesh long-sleeved crop top with a black bra underneath, and single-soled heels. The fur cuff around the ankle added some flare to the fit.

Rose Gold Glitz & Glamorous

Dress: Fashion Nova| Heels: Charlotte Russe

I wore this fit on my actual birthday!  I fell in LOVE. This dress fit perfect to a T, and I got it in an XS. The dress is detailed with rose gold sequences in diamond patterns on the black material which I’m unsure of. I was fortunate enough to find rose gold shoes that matched this dress!

Sexy in Satin

Dress: Fashion Nova | Heels: Charlotte Russe | Choker: Forever 21

I loved this little black dress. The slit in the dress gave it a sexier appeal, but that is exactly what I was going for! It was easy to dance in and was comfortably snug on my body. It comes with a zipper on the side for easier try-on (don’t be like me and try to fit yourself in the dress without unzipping it because you will get stuck!) I paired this fit with a jumbo gold choker, small gold hoops, and gold glittery eyes with a red lip.

Spring Break Miami Look Book 2018

Hey y’all! It’s been a while since I’ve uploaded any content (from myself) on my blog. I missed you guys! Recently I went on a mini vacation with my friends to Miami, Florida — the top 5 spot for college spring breakers.

With our many adventures during our three-day trip, I got to get some fits off while in Miami and that’s why I’m here today! I’m actually very upset because I had sooo many other outfits I wanted to put into my lookbook, but I either forgot my camera or was too intoxicated to take photos! 🙃 Here are my top 3 looks:

South Beach Brunch

Destination: The Sugar Factory

Top & bottom: Fashion Nova | Shoes: Boohoo | Sunglasses: Forever 21

I wish I got pics in this outfit at brunch, but I love the way the bright yellow skort compliments my dark skin. The top gave it an edgier and not so dainty and subtle look, which is what I was going for. I paired this with scrappy, block heels because 1) I knew I was going to be walking for a good minute this day and 2) the black heels compliment the black in my tube top!

Striped Shorts on The Strip

Destination: South Beach, Miami Boardwalk

Bag: Coach | Shorts: Fashion Nova | Top: Boohoo | Necklace: Francesca’s | Sandals: Forever 21

This was my favorite look on my vacation. The long elephant necklace was such a soft touch to the outfit, yet made it feel so complete. I loved how I wore all black in the 80 degree weather, but made it work for the weather! The bralette plus the shorts were the right combo for the hot weather. The metallic pink sandals also added a chic feel to the outfit. I put my hair in an updo (which was so accidental) to show off the fit.

A Floral Night out at the Nightclub

Destination: Cameo Nightclub

Processed with VSCO with e8 presetProcessed with VSCO with e8 preset

Romper: Fashion Nova | Heels: Urban OG

Upset I didn’t get any photos on my camera in this fit, but my iPhone works just fine. I looovveee this romper. I shopped most of Fashion Nova because I know I can trust their sizes to fit me just right. I got this romper in a XS and It fit perfectly. I paired it with some scrappy white heels to compliment the white and pink flowers on the navy blue romper. I love the peek-a-boo opening on the stomach. It gives the romper a more raunchy feel for a night out. I grabbed my big silver hoops and went with a half up half down hairstyle to match this look, which made it perfect for spring!

I hope you guys enjoyed my looks for Miami. Comment if you’d like me to do more cookbooks on my blog. Thank you! xx

Guest Post February | Finishing the Race!

Author, Ashanti Chanel
Finishing the Race

You ever feel so stuck and discouraged? It’s like you’ve gotten yourself into this race you’ve created and now you can’t even jump over the hurdles. You see everyone around you accomplish their goals and you’re wondering where is my finish line? You’ve been running toward your dreams for years and It seems like you’re not getting any closer. The funny thing about life is we always see how long something takes but we never see how far we’ve actually come.

We’ve all got our passions and when we are trying to pursue them it’s so many constant reminders of “This is impossible!” “You can’t go that high.” “You’ll never make It to the finish line!” But it’s also that burning feeling in our bodies that’s telling us “This is what you love!” “You gotta give It your all even if you don’t win!”

It’s so easy to give yourself reasons of why you should give up but it’s so hard to realize why you should stay. Take a step back and ask yourself, “Why did I start this?” Was it for the world or was It for me? When you’re racing for the world, you lose yourself trying to win. You become what the “worlds winner” is suppose to be. Prideful, boastful, and you lose everything in the process. You lose the reason of why you started this in the beginning and you lose it in the end. When you race for you sometimes you have to walk alone, you have to struggle on your own. Others won’t understand why you do what you do. Not even your family and friends, but it’s not for them to understand. It’s for you and God to understand.

When he placed that fire in you, he didn’t place it in there for you to satisfy others with in, therefore the world won’t always agree with it. This hurdle that you’re dealing with right now in your life wants to stop you from finishing the race, but I need you to endure through it all. God created you with a purpose. He gave you a beautiful gift and even though sometimes It seems like nothing is working out in the natural, you better believe he’s cooking up something in the spiritual.

You may not even realize it but you’re closer to the finish line than you were yesterday, you’re closer to your breakthrough than you were yesterday.

You’re closer to finishing the race

Love, Shanti

Guest Post February | Beauty Influencing 101

Author, Alexa

Being a micro-influencer is not an easy task but it is something that I absolutely love doing. I’ve always loved being in front of the camera and I knew I was made for this. I started my YouTube channel at the end of 2016 and I was not well equipped; all I had was my iPhone 6 and I went for it. I was a little scared because I knew that putting myself out there could be an issue specially with society and I wasn’t ready to be judged to be honest, but so far so good! I recently reached one of my goals of reaching 1K subscribers last month in January and my channel has been slowly growing which I’m very happy about.

The way I manage YouTube is by writing down my video ideas for the week and by keeping up with social media trends. I like to do that because it helps me stay focused and productive, and it also helps me stay on track of everything; I realized doing that has helped my channel grow little by little and I have been getting recognized by different bloggers.

IMG_1833When it comes to promoting myself and my work, Instagram and Twitter are my best friends, I use them all the time and the hashtags are very helpful to put your platform out there, so I make sure I use them. in addition, the tags on YouTube are very helpful as well and it helps you get more views and brings more traffic to your channel. It takes a lot of CONSISTENCY AND DETERMINATION to do all of these things, but nothing is impossible. its all about learning how to be proactive and make things work for you.

In the next 3 years, I see myself doing YouTube full time. Right now, I am working on better quality, getting better equipment and being more consistent with uploading more videos. I also see myself working with brands and different organizations to promote my culture (Garifunas) and the afro Latinos in general. I hope and pray that everything works out for me.

Guest Post February | Self Love

Dear Self,

Don’t neglect the responsibility of nurturing yourself. Your existence and imprint as the woman you’re daily developing and blossoming becoming is irreplaceable, unmatchable, and needed. Love the heck out of yourself, just as God loves you.

Author, Widny L.

I am beyond thrilled, ecstatic, and honored to have been given the opportunity to speak on self-love. Not to mention the fact that this is an area which I have neglected for years, and prevented myself from receiving/giving love, appreciation, embracement; and the relentless power of choosing myself even at the worst painful, confused, questionable moments in my life. I’ve learned and I am still in the process of understanding daily that self-love isn’t just embracing the good parts of you that you’re proud of or others have been fond of; but also taking the time out to love the gooey, flawed, authentic version of yourself and investing time into growing and changing anything about you that would be for the better.

Loving a false you will not heal nor bring out the best version of yourself. When you fall in love with the real you, you’re an unstoppable, unshakeable, undaunted woman in the face of anything that may come against you to question your identity as a woman and as a child of God.

I believe there are many ways a woman can cherish, speak words of affirmation about, and appreciate herself wherever she may find herself in life: in and out of seasons, in her highs and lows, the good the bad, and the ugly; or on valentine’s day as a single or with a significant other… etc. Her self-love should be shown, given as a gift to herself no matter what the circumstances are.

There are a couple of things that I have been implementing more and more of, to the degree that it has become a lifestyle. Why? Because I believe a healthy woman is a growing and fruitful woman. But here’s one thing I’d like to share that can be broken into multiple parts but we will only speak of as one:

Be proactive in your time alone.

It’s our responsibility to nurture the woman you are growing into. No one else can cultivate you the way YOU can. I’ve failed miserably countless of times when I neglected and robbed myself by not choosing to utilize my time alone to discover Widny (you may add your name here also), walk in purpose, practicing to perfect my craft, have a day off to rest, disconnecting myself from social media to properly refocus, investing my heart and mind into things or people that are healthy; and, most importantly, seeing myself the way God sees me. We lose a piece of ourselves ladies when we don’t empower and invest. It will be very difficult to celebrate the next woman who’s popping and flourishing in their lane without being a hater; becoming bitter and envious of her.

When you take care of yourself mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, everything around you falls into its proper place. And ladies; correct me if I am wrong, but when you take care of yourself (and I am not referring to any materialistic possessions, titles, status), you glow differently; inner peace and joy becomes your GLOW.

Happy Valentine’s day, ladies!!!

Guest Post February | Brand YOU: Self-marketing Your Way to Whatever the Hell You Want

Author, Tameka Christmas

There are two reasons why people hide behind their brand: shame of promoting a brand/business or people are very much interested in the behind the scenes of the movement, job, business, or brand. I fall into the first category.

I wasn’t afraid of sharing magical moments on Instagram or tweeting popular tweets on twitter. It was natural, automated. I didn’t think about it. I just did it. I also didn’t fear sharing content on social media and give credit. I would screenshot a post on Instagram, retweet a tweet, or share an article or product on Facebook. However, when I got down to sharing events, products, or business ideas for myself, I would shut down.

I cancelled events, photoshoot campaigns, and business ideas because I would give myself so much negative talk until my mind was convinced that everything would failed. I felt stuck, unsure, and convinced that doing my own thing wasn’t for me. I even prolonged the released of my own website because I didn’t like it and felt like it wasn’t perfect enough or didn’t convey the message I wanted. But once I started promoting my blogs the fear started subsiding.

My personal brand allowed me to start promoting my own things: my tweets, my love for jackets, my design business, my blogs, and so much more. I bought Make Yourself Marketable by Emmelie De la Cruz and started really investing in my personal brand. Emmelie’s book guided me through the personal mission statement, goals, core values, successes, and things I can offer to others that align with vision and core values. In addition, I started really researching women who have built their brand from just being themselves and pursuing the things they love. People like Valencia Clay (teacher activist), Mia Ray (lifestyle blogger)), Myleik (Owner of CurlBox), Meagan Ward (Owner of Creatively Flawless), Emmelie (Marketing Strategists), and so many more constantly improves their craft and utilizing their skills to fund and start more opportunities that align with their purpose all while being their authentic self.

“Because true belonging only happens when we present our authentic, imperfect selves to the world, our sense of belonging can never be greater than our level of self-acceptance.” – Brene Brown, Daring Greatly: how the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead

Through this self-marketing journey, I have learned:

  1. Promote but always be yourself
  2. Silence your inner critic
  3. Always keep improving
  4. Life is a journey. Not a destination. Where you start today, you may not even be tomorrow.

As you build your personal brand or even your blog, people want to connect with who you are. They want to know the person behind the brand and how they connect with you. When I started participating in twitter chats, more people started engaging with me. They begin to see me as a person they can communicate with, relate to, and buy from. My sales begin to increase, of course not how I wanted, but people begin to build trust with me.

Self-marketing doesn’t have to be complicated. We tend to overthink and overcomplicate everything. I started researching and learning from women who are their brand. Their brand was an extensive to what they want to offer, not who they are. And once I learned my own value, I felt the journey to my own success took learning, growing, and owing who I am while growing into who I want to be. Identify your transferable skills, develop a vision statement for your life, stay aligned to your core values, and promote the hell out of yourself.

Self-Market Tools:

  1. Facebook page
  2. Blog or Website
  3. LinkedIn
  4. Twitter
  5. Instagram
  6. Attend networking events, workshops, and conferences
  7. Serve your community
  8. Partner with others. Collaboration over competition
