My go-to spring lok

Hey babes! It’s been SUCH a long time since I’ve last made a post! I’ve been so busy with school but now I have officially finished my junior year in college and am now a senior! Now that classes are over, I’ll be able to blog and post more frequently. Recently I made a beauty post of my favorite summer look on my instagram, check it out to see the details on this look! (click here)

So what are my spring makeup must-haves? First off, you have to have an SPF moisturizer/serum! I know this isn’t a makeup item, but it is essential to keeping your face hydrated! My favorite moisturizer and serum right now are NYX’s Honey Dew Me Up Primer, Pond’s Dry Skin Moisturizer, and Farsali’s Rose Gold Elixir.

Screen Shot 2018-05-07 at 11.08.09 AMAnother product I cannot live without is setting powder. It’s hot out, and you don’t want your makeup to crease! What setting powder does is soak up any excess moisture from your makeup that would cause it to move or crease. Say if you have smile lines like me, you know that setting powder is essential for everyday makeup use, even in the spring time! Since I’m a women of color, I tend to stay away from setting powders that don’t have any tint to it. My favorite one to use is the Ben Nye Setting Powder in the color “topaz”. Even though it is not one of the finest grains of powders, it works perfectly for me because it sets my makeup perfectly. Remember, it’s all about technique! You can use a harsh setting powder, but if you apply it correctly, it can work in your favor.

Screen Shot 2018-05-07 at 11.16.11 AMMy next product is everyone’s favorite product: highlighter! We all know the perks of using highlighter, but just getting that extra glow in the spring is worth while. If your’e a beauty guru like me and love to take good quality pictures, add some highlighter to your makeup to make your photos stand out more. People have this thought that they can only use highlighter on their cheekbones… WRONG. I use highlighter on my brow bone, collar bone, by my temples, and on my nose. Sometimes on my body for that extra glow! My fave highlighter right now is Fenty Beauty’s Killawat Freestyle Highlighter in “ginger binge/moscow mule”. I like this product because its very light and feathery, meaning it glides easy onto your face. Also the colors work well with darker skin tones.

My very last product that is in my essential package for the spring? Lipgloss! Tones and tones of lipgloss. All types of lipgloss: shimmery, glossy, and tinted! I’m starting love glossy lips more than matte, and there’s a reason why. Glossy lips are so much easier and convenient to apply. My favorite glosses right now are Maybelline Shine Shot lip Topcoat, NYX Butter Gloss in “Tiramisu”, and Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in “Sandstorm”. I tried to give you guys 3 options: clear, tinted, and shimmery.  These glosses are affordable and non-sticky. They work well with any skin-tone and are amazing products overall.

Alright guys, that’s it for my Spring Must-Have’s. If you have any products you think are essential for the spring, comment them below! I want to check them out. I hope you guys have a wonderful spring and also an amazing summer break! Make sure to check out my latest Youtube video! I’m working on producing more content on there, so stay tuned! Daily Skin Care Routine/Makeup Prep

If you’re like me, a person with dry/sensitive skin, your skin care routine has to include great moisture products. A lot of people don’t realize but you don’t need high-end skin care products for your skin to flourish. ✨  Here’s my up-to-date skin care routine that I also use before my makeup.

Step 1. FACE WASH
img_5325

St. Ives Oatmeal and Scrub Mask | This is made with 100% natural exfoliants like walnut shell powder. I’d pick this first before any of other face scrubs, simply because my skin is very sensitive and this face scrub is probably the softest one I’ve used in a while. One thing I hate is when I wash my face and I get redness from scrubbing — this face scrub decreases that reaction. If I choose to use this as a face mask, I’ll leave it on for about 10 minutes and proceed with lukewarm water and pat my face dry with a face towel. Using this as a scrub and mask has great lightening benefits! My face always looks rejuvenated after using this.

img_5326

St. Ives Green Tea Face Scrub | Insider: green tea helps clear blackheads and calms redness as well. Green tea also has anti-aging and antioxidant benefits that can help delay signs of skin aging, such as sagging skin, sun damage, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. As my #2, I’ll use this when I get tired of using the oatmeal scrub from St. Ives. To be honest, both are GREAT for dry skin, as to other scrubs and masks that are harsh on the skin. Scrubs that a more harsh on the skin, like the St. Ives Apricot Scrub, are mainly used for people with blemishes — hence why they have a rougher texture. So I tend to stay away from harsh exfoliators because my skin is 1) very dry and 2) extremely sensitive. Scrubs with rougher textures will dehydrate your skin, causing you to lose moisture. Luckily, these two scrubs are super gentle. Peep this, the green tea scrub comes out green! (PS, the St. Ives facial scrubs can range from $3-5 depending on where you buy.)

Step 2. TONER

img_5324

Pixi Glow Tonic Exfoliating Toner | This toner includes 5% Glyolic Acid, Aloe Vera, and Ginseng. It gently exfoliates to remove dead skin cells, revealing healthy glowing skin. I use this right after I wash my face to relieve dehydration. This toner is very gentle on the skin and balances it back out after washing it. I’ve used this for about a year now, and my skin has gotten significantly softer! Aloe Vera is a good source of moisture — one reason why I love this toner so much. The pricing is a bit much, but totally worth it. I bought this from target for $15, so it might be pricier somewhere else.

img_5342

S.W. Basics Toner | This toner has only 5 ingredients: water, organic raw apple cider vinegar, witch hazel, organic clary sage and sandalwood oils. You have to shake the bottle a few times every now and then because of the unfiltered apple cider vinegar, which is totally normal. I’ve only used this for a week but I can say it does wonders. My skin showed a significant jump in brightness, just after the first use!  I bought this at target for $9.99 because it was on sale (great deal), but the original price is $22. I didn’t mention this earlier but a toner helps restore your skin’s pH balance, shrinks pores, and refreshes your skin. It also adds an extra layer of protection from harsh chemicals, such as minerals and chlorines that are in tap water. This step is optional but definitely worth a try in your skin regimen.

Step 3: MOISTURIZE

img_5321

Cortizone 10 | Now this is totally optional, but I use this because I tend to have redness and itchiness on my face. I also use it when I get small bumps on my face. It is very helpful for people with eczema, rashes, scars, and acne. You use a dime size amount and you’ll be fine. When I skip this step or run out for a few days, I notice my small bumps start to resurface or I start scratching my face. So this product is a life saver for me!

img_5322

SheaMoisture Peace Rose Oil Complex Sensitive Skin Facial Moisturize | The absolute best facial moisturizer I’ve used by far! Here’s some fun facts: (1) The Peace Rose Oil Complex is a blend of Alpine, Damask and Musk Rose Oils that softens and comforts skin. (2) The Date Palm Extract is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, which helps smooth and protect skin. (3) Camellia Leaf Extract contains anti-inflammatory properties that helps calm and soothe skin. I use a dime size of this and my skin is glowing and ready to go! When I say my skin goes from being completely dry and itchy to glowing and hydrated. This product helps my skin look so fresh and I love it. I bought this at Target (as you can see I LOVE Target, lol) for $12 and it was totally worth my money!

MAKEUP PREP

For makeup prep, I do all 3 steps listed above and follow with my primer of choice. Primer is a base for foundation or face makeup that allows it to go on smoother and last longer. Formulas are available in cream, gel and powder. While moisturizer softens skin, primer prepares skin for your favorite moisturizer or foundation, giving it something to hold onto so it lasts throughout the day.

img_5327NYX Honey Dew Me Up Skin Serum & Primer | This product racks up at around $13 at Target and $17 at Ulta Beauty. I love this because it comes in a gel form with honey gold flakes in it, which moisturizes my skin and leaves a subtle glow. How to use? Apply to clean moisturized face. Wait 2-5 minutes for product to set completely before applying makeup. Remember, if you have dry skin, you won’t want to go with any products that are powder based (including your foundation) because it’ll make your skin appear dry or ashy. As some primers will irritate the skin or even leave a stingy sensation, this one doesn’t! It blends well and is easy to apply. Plus, the bottle is so cute and the gold flakes makes it look aesthetically pleasing. 😩😭  After 5 minutes I’ll put on my makeup as usual.

Alright. There you have it, my daily skin care routine/makeup prep. It’s important to have a skin care routine to maintain healthy skin! Especially if you wear a ton of makeup like me, you need to be able to take care of your skin under that beat face! Makeup makes you look pretty, yes, but the chemicals can destroy your skin as well. Whether you have combination/dry/oily skin and love to keep a beat face (or don’t), try out some good skin care products and build yourself a regimen so you can stay glowing and rejuvenated when you choose to wear no makeup at all. A good skin care regimen doesn’t need a bunch of products for your skin to be healthy. Leave some good skin care products to try down below in the comment section to try. Maybe I’ll have an updated skin routine by the fall. 🌻  thanks for reading!

What’s In My Makeup Bag

What’s in my Makeup Bag? When I’m taking a trip home from college, sleeping over at a friend’s, or wherever the destination may be, these are my essentials for travel.

FACE

img_4761

L’Oreal Paris True Match, $7 | Out of my top 3 fave drug store foundations, this one would be ranked #2 in the shade Nut Brown. This foundation provides a medium coverage, while also giving a radiant glow. I rank this #2 because it’s one of the foundations out of my collection that is just more liquidity than the others which I am not that fond of. Nonetheless I love this foundation because not only does it give my skin a radiant glow, it stays on through out the day.

img_4763

L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-Mist & Fix Spray, $14 | THIS IS THE REAL DEAL. Definitely a 10/10 setting spray. I usually use NYX’s setting spray but I decided to up my game a bit and try something new and I’ve been in love ever since. This setting spray will literally keep your makeup on all day.

img_4774

SheaMoisture Face Primer, $16 | This product I also love. This primer is liquid based and goes on the skin very smoothly. Those who aren’t aware of what primer is used for, it is used to prep and prime the skin before you apply your makeup. The key ingredients in this primer are Shea Butter and antioxidant-rich Vitamin E! This primer can be worn alone, considering it also restores moisture which I love because I have dry skin.

img_4778-1

L.A. Girl HD Pro Concealer, $5 | A very popular product. I own this product in three colors — fawn, medium beige, and cocoa. I use cocoa on my dark marks before I apply my foundation, fawn for my highlight, and fawn + medium beige for cleaning up my brows and prepping my eyelids for eyeshadow along with my primer.

EYES

img_4772

NYX Cosmetics Hot Singles Eyeshadow, $5 | I get this in the shade ‘Bonfire’ and I love this shade because it blends right in with my foundation, giving me a natural look. NYX also has other shades which are very pigmented and I highly recommend them if you’re looking for pigmented eyeshadow for a low price.

img_4770

Wet n’ Wild Megaliner Liquid Eyeliner, $4 | I prefer liquid eyeliner over any other form because it is easy for me to put on. I usually put this over my eyeshadow if my face is pretty dull for a special occasion. If you’re looking for an eyeliner that doesn’t crease or smears, this is the one for you.

img_4764-1

Maybelline Colossal Cat Eyes Mascara, $6 | Definitely one of my top 5 drug store mascaras. This mascara doesn’t leave chunks on my eyelashes like some others do when I tend to put an excessive amount on. Fortunately with this, you don’t need to put an excessive amount on to make your eyelashes look fuller, thick, and dark. This gets the job done!

LIPS

img_4769-1

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip, $6 | In the shade ‘Avenue’, this  dark brick red shade goes well with my a plain face with settle eyeliner — at least that’s how I like to wear it. I love Colourpop’s matte lipsticks because you can put on one layer and it’ll stay on all night or day.

img_4767-1

Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip, $6 | In the shade ‘Limbo’, this is the perfect brown lip! It goes well with a natural bronze look which is what I like to go for. I’ll wear this with a lot of highlighter and just mascara.
img_4768-1

Colourpop Ultra Glossy Lip, $6 | This lip gloss in the shade ‘Finder’s Keepers’ is perfect for the most natural look, especially for WOC. Definitely the go-to shade for a natural face if you’re looking for a subtle hint of color.

HIGHLIGHT

img_4765

Colourpop Super Shock Highlight, $8 | In the shade ‘Avalon’, this highlighter is a true copper color. I like it because I don’t do much contouring, so this darker highlighter gives my face a radiant glow close to my natural skin color. Almost like a bronzer.

BROWS

img_4766-1

Colourpop Brow Colour,  $6 | When I say this works just as good as ABH Brow Pomade… I get this in the shade ‘Black N’ Brown’ to fill in and outline my brows. After that, I use some clear eyebrow gel to set it and voilá!

Along with all of these goodies, I keep a face brush, beauty blender, small blending sponge, makeup remover wipes, eyeshadow brush, and eyebrow grooming brush in my bag which are all essentials when applying makeup. I try not to carry too much when traveling. I just pick my go-to items that I know will look amazing on me. Have you tried any of these products or recommend any good items to try? Comment below on your thoughts! Thanks for reading.
